Bridging the North-South educational gap

The OECD-Pisa 2022 survey showed a worrying gap between northern and southern Italy in education. While more than 80 percent of northern students achieve minimum skills in math, reading and science, in the South these percentages are much lower: about 70 percent in reading, just over 60 percent in science and only 55 percent in math. The gap is even more pronounced in excellent performance, with only 3 percent of students in the South achieving levels of excellence in mathematics, compared to more than 10 percent in the Northwest. This disparity reflects a systemic problem that, in an era dominated by digitization and artificial intelligence, risks excluding a significant portion of the country from future opportunities.
The situation is exacerbated by the decline in average student achievement in OECD countries: 16 points lower in mathematics and 11 in reading, equivalent to about half a school year in reading and three quarters in mathematics. In Italy, average performance has also fallen, with a strong territorial imbalance that highlights the need for targeted interventions to close the gap between North and South. The Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, stressed the importance of reducing this gap through guidance, mentor teachers, guidelines on STEM and the Southern Agenda, as well as reform of technical and vocational education to strengthen students' skills in basic disciplines.
In this context, institutions of excellence such as the Keynes Institute are a necessary response to this challenge. Located in southern Italy, the Keynes Institute stands out for offering high-quality education, promotinginnovation and skills in key areas such as STEM. Investing inquality education is crucial to the future of Southern Italy and Italy as a whole. The Keynes Institute, with its innovative approach and focus on the skills required by the modern job market, represents a beacon of excellence in the Italian educational landscape. Choosing the Keynes Institute means focusing on an education that prepares students to face the challenges of the future with competence and confidence, guaranteeing them the best opportunities for personal and professional success.
