Empathy in Teaching: Fundamental to Educational Success.
In the context of education, empathy emerges as a crucial element in student success and in creating an inclusive and positive school environment. Defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, empathy plays an essential role in how teachers interact with students and guide them on their learning journey. Numerous researches in the field of education have highlighted the link between teacher empathy and student success. A study by Jennings and Greenberg (2009) showed that empathetic teachers are able to create an emotionally positive classroom climate, promoting student engagement and improving student academic performance. In addition, empathy is critical in addressing students' diverse needs and promoting inclusion in the classroom. Empathetic teachers are able to recognize and respond to students' diverse perspectives, experiences, and learning styles, creating an environment in which everyone feels accepted and valued. Empathy also plays a key role instudents' social-emotional education, teaching them essential skills such as self-awareness, emotional self-regulation and interpersonal skills. Empathic teachers provide a positive and supportive model for the development of these skills, contributing to students' personal and professional success. Developing and maintaining empathy requires an ongoing commitment by teachers to practice emotional awareness andactive listening. Teacher training should include elements that foster the development of empathy, such as critically reflecting on one's teaching style and learning strategies for creating an empathetic classroom climate. At the Keynes Institute, empathy is not just a concept, but a core value that permeates every aspect of our educational philosophy. We actively promote the practice of empathy among our teaching staff and encourage teachers to be models of compassion and understanding for our students. Investing in teacher empathy is a fundamental commitment for us, because we believe that only through true understanding and human connection can the full educational potential of every individual be achieved.
